Gervinho: “I choose Arsenal”

Lille striker Gervinho told France Football magazine there are only “a few details” left to finalise, before his £11 million transfer to the gunners is complete. The Ivorian scored 15 goals last season, as well earning 10 assists, in 43 appearances for the team which won the French double last season. The 24 year old has promised Arsenal fans he will help to end their club’s 6 year trophy drought. He said:

“I chose Arsenal because it’s a young group within which I will be able to integrate easily,”

“I could develop more over there. There’s only a few details left to sort out.

“A risk? Not at all. I’m going to Arsenal to play. The best risk to take is to look to score goals and to play a lot.

“In football you have to take risks if you want to win. I’m going to Arsenal to win.

“I had no hesitation. None. But in a transfer there’s always a period of analysis and negotiations. All sides had to be satisfied so that things could develop smoothly.

“I’m going there to play, not to be on the bench. Arsenal love the game. And I love teams that love the game.

“The Premier League is a notch above. It’s maybe the best league in the world. I want to live that sensation.”

Tottenham were also keen on aquiring the services of Gervinho, but Champions League football was too hard an offer to turn down. He is set to put pen to paper to complete a four year deal worth £60,000 a week.

His arrival to the Emirates could signal the already imminent departure of Nicklas Bendtner, who is interesting numerous clubs, namely from Germany and Portugal.

Arsenal Premier League Fixtures 2011/12

Arsenal start their Premier League campaign with a tricky trip to Newcastle. St. James Park was the scene of a enthralling 4-4 draw last season, but the gunners will be hoping to claim three points in the first match of the season. Arsenal face arguably the toughest match of the season as they travel to Old Trafford, this after the gunners welcome Liverpool to the Emirates in the second game of the season. This is a very tough start for the gunners, however if Arsenal start the season well with at least seven points from these three games, this could kickstart the season and Arsenal could find themselves above Manchester United and Liverpool at least. Arsenal finish the league season with a match against Wet Brom at the Hawthorns.

Transfer Rumour: Gary Cahill

The tall dominant Bolton centre back has been subject of much interest from the gunners. The England international has established himself as one of the best centre backs in the Premier League and has placed himself into the England squad, as third choice centre back. Wenger has expressed his desire for more height in the squad, due to Arsenals’ poor set piece record, and Cahill would provide this. Other transfer target Samba has recently stated that he is staying put at Blackburn so an approach for the former Villa man is look increasingly likely. However, his 15 million pound price tag may put Wenger off, but with Samba avoiding a transfer, the 25 year old may be the only option open to Wenger with Premier League experience. He would be a quality buy for the gunners who need a commanding centre back with leadership qualities, and Cahill would bring these to the Emirates.

Transfer Rumour: Karim Benzema

Now, this is an interesting target. It seems a transfer which would cost too much for Arsene’s liking, but he has recently admitted his admiration for the striker and claimed it is not impossible for the transfer to take place. This is a big hint that Wenger could make a move for the French striker in the summer. He is likely to cost around 25 million pounds, which would smash Arsenal’s current transfer record of 15 million pounds for Russian winger Andrey Arshavin. A transfer of this caliber and price would show Arsenal really do mean business, however Wenger may be reluctant to spend that much on one player. The former Lyon man has averaged a goal every two games, and has started many more than he had anticipated this season, after the long absence of Higuian for four months. Benzema’s agent has stated he is happy at Real Madrid, but if Arsenal come in with an offer which guarantees him first team football, he is bound to take the offer, rather than sitting on the bench at the Bernabau. Something that may hinder the deal to take Benzema to the Emirates would be his wage demands. Wenger keeps a strict wage budget and would not want to pay over the odds to have him at the club.

Transfer Rumour: Ricky Alvarez

There has been some confusion with this player. Some websites stated his contract has expired with Velez and therefore was available on a free transfer, but it turns out he still has three years left on his contract. The owner of Velez, the club Alvarez is currently at, has said he demands 10 million pounds for the player who has reportedly already agreed personal terms with Wenger’s team. The Arsenal manager has flown to South America to find some new players, hinting at Alvarez coming to The Emirates. The 6ft 2in Argentine, who also holds an Italian passport, is known for his versatility, and can play across the midfield, as well as a second striker. However this transfer hints at Nicklas Bendtner or Andrey Arshavin leaving the club, as they are unhappy at the lack of first team action with the gunners. Roma and most recently Manchester United have been linked with aiming to hijack the move, but it looks like Arsenal are still in pole position to land the player.
