Five players who can replace Gael Clichy at Arsenal

After a whole summer of speculations and rumors, Gael Clichy has finally left Arsenal to join Manchester City for reported £7 million. With the departure of the French left back, the last member of the legendary ‘Invincible’ team has also left.

Kieran Gibbs is the natural replacement that Arsenal have in there ranks. Carl Jenkinson, who has joined Arsenal from Charlton, is also a backup in that position. Gibbs for all his talents is still very inexperienced and needs time to develop his game. He is good when it comes to attacking, in fact many consider him a better attacker than Clichy was, a better crosser of the ball, but his defensive play is still questionable.

Even though Wenger has said there will be no new left backs coming in, here are five Left backs that could fit the bill:

  José Enrique

 Present Club –Newcastle United

Interested Clubs – Liverpool,Barcelonaand Arsenal.

Price – £15million

The Spanish left back has been in news for some time now. After an impressive season with Newcastle  last year he has attracted many admirers. He is solid defensively and very fast as well.Liverpool has been linked with him all summer. Recently Barcelona have shown interest in him as well. Wenger is keen on the Spaniard as well. The Magpies have reportedly put a £15million price tag on him. Wenger is unlikely to pay so much for him and hence Anfield looks the most possible destination to Enrique next season.

Possibility of coming to Arsenal – 30%

Emilio Izaguirre

 Present Club – Celtic

Interested Clubs –ManchesterUnited andLiverpool.

Price – £10 million

The 25-year-old Honduran has been linked toLiverpooland Manchester United. Manchester United’s interest has been confirmed by the player himself. In recent times the player has come out and said that he would like to honour the 3 years contract he has at Parkhead. Celtic has reportedly slapped a £10 million price tag on him. This seems a more feasible fee for Arsenal. Wenger hasn’t shown any him yet, but with United’s interest dying out and Liverpool chasing Enrique; this might be a good time for Wenger to bid for him, though he looks most likely to stay at his present club.

Possibility of coming to Arsenal – 5%

Michel Bastos

Present Club –Lyon

Interested Clubs – Juventus, Liverpool, Chelsea andManchesterUnited

Price – £15 million to £18 million

This is one player, I personally would love to see at the Emirates. The Brazilian is a talented footballer. He operates as a left-winger for Lyon and plays as a left-back for Brazil. He is big, strong and really quick – a very direct and powerful player. Something Arsenal need very badly. Having said all this, it is very unlikely that he will come to London. Juventus is hot on his heels andTurinseems to be his most likely destination that is unless Wenger gets some tequila shots and decides to cough up big money to land the Brazilian.

Possibility of coming to Arsenal – 1%

Aly Cissokho

 Present Club –Lyon

Interested Clubs – Arsenal, Liverpool,ManchesterCityandManchesterUnited.

Price – £15m to £20m

Gunners are the favourites to land the Frenchman as things stands now. The high price tag set byLyonmay still cause some concerns for Wenger. Liverpool and both the clubs from Manchester are also said to be vying for the tall, athletic left-back. He would certainly be a good capture for Arsenal. A capable replacement for Clichy, who is said to very good while going forward as well.

Possibility of coming to Arsenal – 70%

Leighton Baines

 Present Club – Everton

Interested Clubs – Arsenal andLiverpool

Price – £10m to £12m

Performance wise, he was the best left back in the EPL last year. Arsenal and Liverpool have shown interest in acquiring him. He would probably be the best option for Arsenal among the five mentioned here, given his experience in this league. He has a solid left foot and very good at set-pieces as well, something that Arsenal lack presently. Baines has scored some wonderful goals for Everton in the past years. Wenger would do very well to get him to Emirates, with Everton willing to sell him.

Possibility of coming to Arsenal – 50%

Among all these options Cissokho and Baines will be the most favored ones, if Wenger chooses to buy.

Leave your comments on any other options you would like to suggest.
